Recommended changes to the ACA include letting the enhanced subsidies expire, increasing repayment amounts for people who fail to project their incomes correctly, and ending the initiative that allows very low-income people to enroll in ACA coverage year-round rather than having to wait for the once-a-year general open enrollment period.

Medicare Advantage Consensus Waning Ahead Of 2024 Election

Both political parties are more open to Medicare Advantage (MA) reform than in previous election cycles, a shift former federal officials warned should be a warning call for the health insurance industry to refocus its messaging and advocacy efforts surrounding the plans.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) finalized its 0.16% cut of MA benchmark payments in March, causing an uproar of pushback from insurers saying the decision would result in layoffs, a retreat from service areas and fewer supplemental benefits for members. Lawmakers have pointed out the MedPAC report that found Medicare is projected to overpay MA plans by $88 billion as compared to what traditional Medicare would’ve received.

Consumers More Satisfied With Medicare Advantage Than Commercial Plans

Satisfaction among Medicare Advantage customers is 87 points higher than among customers of commercial member plans.

The largest contributing factors that are causing the higher satisfaction with Medicare Advantage compared to Commercial Plans are relating to lower out-of-pocket costs, the ease of finding care, and the ability to choose providers.

Section 1115 Waiver Watch: Medicaid Pre-Release Services For People Who Are Incarcerated

In April 2023, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released guidance encouraging states to apply for a new Section 1115 demonstration opportunity to test transition-related strategies to support community reentry for people who are incarcerated.

After receiving approval of the Section 1115 reentry waiver request in January 2023, California will be the first state to implement the reentry demonstration in October 2024.

Employer Healthcare Costs Projected to Rise 9% in 2025: Aon

Inflation, expensive specialty drugs and demand for pricy glucagon-like peptide 1 medications, or GLP-1s, are pushing costs higher, according to Aon. Pricey glucagon-like peptide 1 drugs, or GLP-1s, for weight loss are also projected to increase spending.

The increase will bump plan costs per employee past $16,000 in 2025, the report found. This year, employer insurance costs grew 6.4% compared to 2023, while average expenses per employee rose to more than $14,800.
