A clause in Wayne DeVeydt’s new contract prevents him from participating in activities that compete with UnitedHealth. That’s standard for senior executives.

Wayne DeVeydt has left Centene’s board for the posiition of chief financial officer for UnitedHealth. This is likely to create a conflict of interest as the two insurance companies are competitors in a number of markets. However, DeVeydt’s contract prevents him from participating in any activity that competes with UnitedHealth. Centene is also reducing the number of directors on its board to 10 instead of replacing DeVeydt.

More Urban Hospitals Dually Classifying as Rural Under Medicare: Study

Dually classifying allows urban facilities to benefit from rural health programs, even as many rural facilities struggle financially and are at high risk of closure, researchers wrote.

In 2016, facilities could be classified as urban and rural simultaneously — allowing them to take advantage of benefits for both hospital types. A growing number of urban hospitals are benefiting from this almost decade-old rule.

HHS Abandons mRNA Vaccine Research

BARDA will cancel nearly $500 million worth of contracts supporting the development of mRNA shots, which proved vital during the COVID pandemic.

Despite strong clinical evidence of their safety and effectiveness against COVID-19 and the flu, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has announced plans to redirect vaccine funding toward what he describes as “safer” and “broader” platforms. This decision does not affect ongoing research into non-vaccine applications of mRNA technology.

Gates Foundation Pledges $2.5B to Women’s Health Research

The nonprofit highlighted non-hormonal contraception and preeclampsia treatment as areas of “breakthrough potential.”
